AND 1: The Sneaker Champ for UAAP Season 75 (so far) is...

... kiefer ravena! the second year guard from the ateneo blue eagles has been seen rocking different kicks on court in uaap season 75.

in their games against ust and nu in the first round, he was seen sporting an id version of nike huarache 2k4.

he also wore an id version of nike's latest model hyperdunk 2012 in their first round encounter with feu.

in their second round game against up, he laced up some heat on the hardwood with the "scoring title" edition of kevin durant's signature shoe, kd4. he led the blue eagles in scoring with 21 points, including a game-clinching three-point play, to give ateneo the win over the up fighting maroons, 73-66.

i wonder what "the phenom" would pick from his closet for the next few games this season. there are plenty of popular sneaker releases in recent years whose colorway easily blends with ateneo's blue and white. perhaps the jordan 11 (concords look pretty good with either their dark or light uniform but surely space jams would look cool on court), jordan 3 (true blues?), air max penny 1 (orlando cw is surely a neat pick)... what else should he wear on court this season?

The Scores:

ADMU 73 – Ravena 21, Gonzaga 10, Salva 10, Slaughter 9, Erram 9, Tiongson 6, Buenafe 3, Chua 3, Elorde 2, Golla 0, Pessumal 0, Sumalinog 0.

UP 66 – Soyud 14, Silungan 13, Asilum 10, Lopez 8, Gamboa 6, Padilla 6, Gallarza 5, Hipolito 2, Montecastro 2, Manuel 0, Romero 0, Mbah 0, Wierzba 0.

Quarter Scores: 17-17; 32-34; 53-46; 73-66

Collecting shoes is an addiction

compared to the people featured in this video, i only have eight pairs of basketball shoes. but i have to admit that collecting shoes is an addiction.

i already blogged something about my story as a basketball shoe collector. like any other collections, collecting items is a treasure hunt. and i can surely relate with people who bear long lines in order to cop their personal "holy grail." i may not actually have eight legs to have each pair hit the ground, but there's something about getting that shoe that i really want. every pair i cop has its own story to tell, whether it's in the feet of the basketball player who wore it or in the way i personally got it.

this "sneaker game" has gone to a different level with retros getting released and new shoes showing up on shoe stores and even in the internet. though the "sneaker game" has gone overboard lately, i have to say that i'm still going to play it. next up in my list is the air jordan 11 breds (black-red) which is coming this december.

collecting is a passion. it's either you get it, or die trying.

Happy Birthday, Penny Hardaway!

when i was in the minor seminary, one of the most coveted numbers in a basketball jersey is number 1 because of anfernee "penny" hardaway.

hardaway was one of the exciting young combo guards of the mid to late 90's in the nba. his height and explosiveness were distinct qualities that made him more than the traditional point guard. his game somehow revolutionized the perspective of point guards as distributors and ball-handlers to dynamic scorers. thanks to his team-up with then-rising star shaquille o'neal, the orlando magic had deep runs in the nba playoffs, even reaching the finals in 1995 only to be swept by hakeem olajuwon and the houston rockets for the championship. despite the return of michael jordan and the re-establishment of the chicago bulls dynasty, the magic went far in the playoffs because of hardaway's solid performance on court. unfortunately, his career took a bump after suffering a knee injury. despite his several attempts of coming back into the game, penny was never the same player that he used to be. if not for that injury, he could have had a great run in the nba and perhaps winning a championship along the way.

besides his game, one of the most memorable facets of hardaway in the nba is his shoes. besides michael jordan, he had an iconic collection of signature shoes with nike which includes air go lwp, air up, air flight one, air max penny 1, air penny 2, air penny 3, and air foamposite one. however, because of a career cut short due to knee injury, his signature line of basketball shoes also entered into retirement. but with the emergence of hybrid models, penny's shoes were given a new face through the half cent and zoom rookie. and lately, the return of retro models also ushered in the comeback of his signature line in the market.

i'm quite fortunate to own several models from his shoe line. i never thought that a shoe made for a combo guard like penny was quite comfortable for someone who played forward/center most of the time. when i was in high school, my next valuable pair of kicks besides the air jordan 12 cherry was the air penny 3 blackout. air penny 2 has to be one of the most comfortable gaming shoes i ever worn. i haven't tried how air max penny 1 feels on foot but the performance would surely be close with the other models.

Top 10 Dunks of the NBA 2011-2012 Season

three blake griffin dunks (two of them over pau gasol, the other with perkins getting mozgov-ed), lebron jumping over lucas, kd to skeletor, and gerard green flying and flushing the windmill with those concords.

dunks. that makes basketball better than football.

Air Jordan 12 Playoffs

after all the frenzy that made air jordan xi the hottest kicks last december, another jordan favorite hits the shelves with the air jordan xii playoffs. he wore these kicks during the playoffs of the 96-97 nba season, leading the chicago bulls to their second consecutive (and fifth of six from the two three-peats) championship.

released for the first time since 2004, this is one of the "original" colorways of the j12, together with the taxis (white-black), cherrys (white-red), obsidians (french blue-white), and breds (black-red, also known as "flu games"). "the greatest of all time" wore these joints most memorably during the first game of the 1997 nba finals where he made the buzzer beater over byron russell (yes, the same guy he swiped in making the "last shot" a season later). i can still remember watching that game on our way to subic for a field trip way back second year high school!

the 12's are my first pair of jordans. i got the cherrys and used them way back second year high school. it was durable, i even used it until fourth year high school! my classmates owned other colorways mentioned above, but my favorite of the colorways was the playoffs. i like the balance of the black and white in the shoe. and of course, it's a jordan... who wouldn't want to wear jordans in a basketball-crazy minor seminary?

unfortunately, because of prior commitments (read: social action internship in legazpi), i missed the release of one of my anticipated kicks for the year. with price ranges from resellers zooming up to php 9495 (that's + php 2000 from the srp of php 7495), looks like i will have to wait for the next release of the same model (obsidians are coming in july, i think) or wait for a kind-hearted reseller who will sell it to me on srp. i can treat him to a meal in kfc as a plus. haha!

UPDATE (may 10, 2012): i finally copped my pair... in malaysia! thank god for countries where basketball is not much of a hit. next up: air jordan 11 breds! i have until christmas to save for them!

FIRST 5: 5 kicks from 2012 NBA All-Star weekend

here are my top 5 sneaker choices from the 2012 nba all star weekend (photos taken from nicekicks.com)

1. anfernee hardaway wore nike air foamposite one player exclusive during the celebrity game. this pe was very identical to what he wore during his playing years with the orlando magic. penny still has one of the best kicks line ever, perhaps next to michael jordan (charles barkley would be a close third).

2. kevin durant wore two kd4s at the same time: the year of the dragon edition in his left foot and the upcoming cool grey colorway in his right. his shoe line has to be the next best thing nike has to offer, provided that they don't screw up with it. kd just gave me a good idea on what to do with his kicks.

3. paul george wore nike flight one fresh mint during the slam dunk contest. some say he was "robbed" in the competition, but he wins the kicks category by wearing this in his reverse sticker dunk and the tron-inspired dunk. it's nice to see a classic shoe in a fresh colorway during the all-star weekend.

4. rajon rondo wore nike air foamposite one galaxy during the all star game. this shoe has caught the attention of people around the sneaker community after a riot ensued in a florida mall on the occasion of its release. it surely feels good for players to get those rare kicks without the hassle we undergo.

5. kevin durant wins the all-star game most valuable player award for the first time in his career while wearing kd4 galaxy edition shoes. he led the west all stars with 36 points to give them the win. these joints glow in the dark and was released recently but i didn't had the chance to cop them. too bad.

1996 NBA All-Star Game

the 1995-1996 nba season has to be one of, if not the most memorable nba seasons of all time. for one, it marked the return of michael jordan to a full nba season, leading the bulls to a record 72-10 win-loss record and stirring them to their fourth championship and the first of their second three-peat. and of course, the shoe game then was so beautiful that it featured the best and most memorable kicks during for someone who grew up in the 90's. even when i was in the minor seminary, i wanted having those kicks so bad that i drew them in my school notebooks. well, that partly explains why i collect basketball shoes today particularly those that i wanted to have way back then. but that's another story.

the 1996 nba all star game was also one of the highlights of a very memorable season. held in san antonio (whose star player then was david robinson, my basketball "idol" next to michael jordan), the east all stars won against the west, 129-118. michael jordan scored 20 points and was named all-star mvp for leading the visiting east all-stars (who was with the likes of scottie pippen, grant hill, shaquille o'neal, penny hardaway, reggie miller, patrick ewing, and the like) against the west all-stars (comprised by some notable stars then: david robinson, charles barkley, hakeem olajuwon, jason kidd, shawn kemp, gary payton, john stockton and karl malone).

i saw this article from solecollector.com featuring the all-star game. for those who grew up in the 90's, the kicks will surely elicit memories of the sneaker game that was.

"the reign man" and shaq wearing two of the most iconic reeboks in the 90's: kamikaze and shaqnosis, respectively

jordan pulls up a jumper with the aj xi colombias, which will be out this coming december

i bet you can name other iconic shoes in this image. hahaha

Air Jordan X Retro

on january 21, air jordan x, one of michael jordan's signature signatures, will be released to the public for the first time since the return of his airness in 1995. after his retirement from basketball to play major league baseball for two nba seasons, jordan wore these shoes while wearing jersey number 45. in his comeback season, he played 17 regular season games, averaging 26.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. the bulls advanced to the playoffs, only to be knocked off by eventual runner-up orlando magic led by the dynamic duo of shaquille o'neal and penny hardaway.

since i'm "retired" from the sneaker game, i am not copping these joints. but watching the video (courtesy of nicekicks.com) posted above brings back memories of his wearing those kicks. my favorite highlight is the last play on the video where he made the game winning buzzer beater against the atlanta hawks, and knocking the hardwood in celebration.

Merry Concords Christmas!

All roads lead to Concords

the legendary shoe that michael jordan wore in the 1995-1996 season, air jordan xi concords, is perhaps on top of sneakerheads' and basketball fanatics' wishlist this xmas season. what could be the kicks that are easily identified with his airness, the 11s are for sure taking nike stores around the world by storm on its release date tomorrow. thanks to titan, i have my pair "secured" through the green chip and early email registration. but for those who have yet to fall in line and find their way to a pair, looks like it will be a long, narrow, bumpy, and winding road ahead for them.

today and tomorrow, all roads lead to the aj xi concords. here are some of the scenes of camp-outs for the concords around the world:

for those who are copping the concords on its release date, it's all about luck now. for those in line, it's hard to expect something tangible with heavy demand on limited supply. for those at the end of the line, it's not the end of the world. there might be a better release soon - maybe these or some other kicks. there are resellers around, but only diehards will submit to their "rape" prices. and for those who will cop, congratulations for getting the holy grail of your sneaker life. in the end, they're just shoes. they, like the rest of creation, shall pass.

Dear Santa Claus

dear santa claus,

i have been a good boy this year. well, i think so.

i have been a collector all my life. when i was in elementary, i collected nba cards and i still have my michael jordan and david robinson card collections intact. in high school, i collected magic the gathering cards and my red cheese deck is still with me. i also collected comics and i was able to keep those that are dear to me like the superman-doomsday series, which helped me write my college thesis. for the past several years, i have been collecting basketball jerseys of my favorite players. and this year, i have begun collecting basketball shoes.

i was fortunate to have owned two of the most memorable kicks during my high school years: nike air jordan 12 and nike air penny 3. i used these shoes mostly on cement courts, whether it was a daily pick-up game in the minor seminary or an official league game in our village tournament. unfortunately, the wear and tear it has undergone forced these kicks to retirement. in college, i had two memorable basketball shoes: and 1 mad game and nike hyperflight. i wore them for two basketball championship runs in the inter-seminary meet where our team won back-to-back titles. however, it also underwent tremendous wear and tear, and eventually threw the towel from competition.

since i graduated from college, i was the one who bought my own basketball shoes. growing up with a very supportive family who have provided my needs and wants throughout my life, i realized that i should start purchasing my own basketball shoes as i started earning on my own. my first purchase was nike air force operate, a shoe that i constantly visited when i was in the states in 2005 but never really had the chance to purchase it until it found its way to a nike outlet store in barangka. before embarking on the 30 day silent ignatian retreat, i bought a nike air force stat, which, like air force operate, were shoes worn by amare stoudamire - one of my favorite nba players at present. both shoes have played through countless games on both wooden and cement courts, for pick-up games and serious competition. both of them are with two of my closest friends at present.

two years ago, i saw one of my dream shoes - nike air max penny 2 - the last pair on store, with my exact shoe size, on sale with a hefty 40% discount. i immediately bought it, as it was one of the shoes that i never really got to have when i was in high school. it has served me well, giving me a championship in our high school alumni league and a playoff appearance in an inter-school faculty basketball league, until its retirement last semestral break.

the pursuit for my dream shoes did not stop there. last year, i copped nike air max penny 1 and nike air max 2 cb 94 - the shoes that i have wanted to have when i was in grade 6. since i had the financial capability to buy one, i got a them. i only use the barkleys when playing on wooden courts while i kept the pennys in deadstock. for cement courts, i bought an adidas ts commander as my pair of beaters. and just last month, i bought a nike zoom kd 3, which replaced air penny 2 for major basketball events. i still have a kd 4 blackout coming, and i hope to complete payment by monday. i learned to take better care of my shoes, and so established a humble collection of basketball shoes that i love.

however, there is this one shoe that i really consider as my holy grail - that pair of basketball shoes that i wanted to have yet have eluded me much - it has to be air jordan 11.

when i was in high school, i drew basketball shoes in my notebooks, particularly jordan 11s. since i only see them on tv or in the newspaper, all i had then was a doodle of jordan 11 concords on my notebook. i've seen and tried counterfeits, but i think there's no substitute for the real thing. and even when i was earning, i never really had the chance to buy the original. it was this longing for the original that made me look for it and hope for the day that it would find its way on my feet. until i learned that the concords will be released this year, i was given a new chance to get myself a pair.

however, this sneaker game has gone overboard, as seen in the black cements last month. resellers have stocked up prices, sizes are harder to find, and strategies for copping have been limited. until titan had this contest one has to write a 96 word essay why they deserve to have a pair of concords. unfortunately, i snoozed on that contest. i really thought i would not be able to get my pair of aj xi concords unless i subject myself to a wallet-slashing reseller.

until this afternoon, while researching some songs for our christmas program, i encountered a post of facebook that titan will be receiving poker chips that would assure a slot of buying the concords during its release on december 23. the release of the chips began at 2:23pm and there were only 22 chips up for grabs at titan katipunan. i gave it a try, i mean, if i'll get one, then thank god; if no, then it's really not meant to be.

and the try paid off.

and so, my dear santa claus, please make my christmas this year a truly memorable one. the chip was just one of three more steps to go. i still have to fall in line, get a wristband, and purchase. and the other is, i have to raise funds to cop my own holy grail.

santa, i have been a good boy this year. i've been through a lot and having the concords in my hands is a great xmas gift to me. the chip is just the start of the line. until then, i do hope that on the 23rd, the concords will finally be mine, and have a merry christmas.

love,
preacher in basketball shoes

p.s. now as to where to find the payment, i guess i might as well burn the bridge when i get there.
