What can I give to the King? (A Reflection on the Feast of the Epiphany)
on this feast of the epiphany of the lord, we reflect on gifts.
during the christmas season, we must have made up a "wish list" of sorts - a list of gifts that we want to receive for christmas. some of us got what we want, others will have to wait for their wishes to be fulfilled.
but more than receiving material gifts, the birth of our lord jesus christ is the most precious gift we must receive in this season of christmas. out of the father's generous and overflowing love to us, he sent his son as a gift to us. and the son, out of his abounding generosity to the father's will, offered his life as a gift back to the father through his sacrifice on the cross for our salvation.
the word "epiphany" means "manifestation" or "appearance." today, we remember that jesus, the babe on the manger, manifested himself to the three wisemen (not really "kings") - melchor, gaspar, and balthazar - who represented all of humanity. the three wisemen gave him three gifts that symbolized aspects of jesus' life and mission: gold for his kingship, frankincese for his divinity, and myrrh for his salvific sacrifice on the cross.
perhaps, more than asking what gift we can receive or still receive for this chrismas season, we remember that we have received the gift of jesus christ in our lives - and that gift is more than enough. on our part, we ask ourselves: like the three wise men, what gift can we give to him?
when i was in my first year in san carlos seminary, one of the christmas carols we used to sing is the song entitled "what can i give to the king?" the lyrics of the song will hopefully lead us to reflect and offer the gift that we can best give to christ not just on christmas but on this year and even our lifetime: our words and actions, our days and tomorrows, our strengths and weaknesses, our lights and shadows... our lives, whole and entire, offered to god.
may our lives truly be an "epiphany" of god's love, that through us, others may see, experience, and remember the emmanuel: god is with us!
What can I give to the King?
Give to the One who has everything?
What can I give?
What gift can I bring?
What can I give to the King?
What can I give to the King?
Give Him a heart that’s opened up wide
Give Him a life that’s got nothing to hide
Give Him a love that’s tender and true
And He’ll give it all back to you
Yes, He’ll give it all back to you
What can we give to the King?
Give to the One who has everything?
What can we give?
What gift can we bring?
What can we give to the King?
What can we give to the King?
Give Him all glory, His people on earth
Give Him all praises, this day of His birth
Give Him all honor in all that we do
As He’s given His life to you
As He’s given His life to you
What can we give to the King?
Give to the One who has everything?
What can we give to the King?
What can we give to the King?

Emmanuel: God is with us! (A Reflection on Grace from the readings of the fifth day of Misa de Gallo)
A homily-paper submitted in my Grace class, using themes on Grace, Incarnation, and Divinization. This was based on the homily originally delivered in Filipino on the fifth day of Misa de Gallo at Santo Cristo de Las Pinas Parish.
Signs. Signs play a major role in our daily lives. Signs may be objects, qualities, or events whose presence or occurrence indicates something other than itself. Signs may convey information or give instructions, like traffic signs that tell us when to stop and go, or gestures like a hug or a kiss that show endearment and care. Signs may also be manifestations of what is happening or what is going to happen, like dark clouds that send feelers of strong rains or Christmas songs and decors that already point to Christmas day.
But for us Filipinos, signs take another meaning. We ask for signs in moments when we are uncertain or unsure of what is bound to happen. In making decisions, we seek for a sign that would help us make sense of what should we do or choose. Sometimes, these signs may also accompany hints of superstitious beliefs in us. When we wear our favorite shirt, it may be a sign that we will have a good day ahead. When our palms feel itchy, it may be a sign that we will soon have money. Indeed, signs point to things other than themselves, and most of the time they are subject to a variety of meanings and interpretations.
Signs are powerful bearers of messages, and sometimes these signs may not necessarily point to what we normally expect. Signs can at times be confusing, and more often than not, misleading. A kiss that is traditionally used to express love and affection was once used to betray Jesus Christ. Five days before Christmas, we look at the signs leading to perhaps the happiest day of the year. Recently, Mother Nature brought signs of destruction through Typhoon Sendong, which gravely affected our brothers and sisters in Northern Mindanao and Southern Visayas. Water, considered a symbol of life, killed people and damaged property in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Dumaguete, and other cities down south. Moreover, there is still much turmoil and misunderstanding in the government and among countries as seen, heard, and read in the news. Looking at these, it seems to us that the signs pointing to Christmas are not so bright. Christmas, the time of the year when people are merry and joyful, is cast with the shadow of calamity and confusion.
Our readings for our Misa de Gallo today speak of signs and what they point to or the meaning that they convey. In our first reading, we heard the Lord speaking to King Ahaz, telling him to ask for a sign from Him yet he refused to do so. Looking into the story, King Ahaz was thinking of seeking the help of foreign nations as his own kingdom was under threat of war. The Lord sent Isaiah to encourage Ahaz and his kingdom to trust in Him and not in political alliances that may lead the people to believe in other gods and thus destroy their relationship with the Lord. Yet despite Ahaz’s refusal to ask for a sign, the Lord Himself gave him a sign: “the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” This sign found fulfillment in our gospel reading, where the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive in her womb and bear a son despite being a virgin. And this son, who shall be named Jesus, “will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Signs. God gives us signs and symbols in our lives, signs that assure us of His guidance, protection, and love. Jesus Christ, the Emmanuel—“God-with-us”—is more than just a sign that God bestows upon us to give joy to the world and save us from sin. God, as almighty and powerful as He is, is totally in love with us that He wants to be near us and be one of us. Through His only begotten Son, He scattered the darkness of the world and gave us light that would lead us back to Him. He endured the rejection of the people and the agony of the cross to save us and be united with Him. He came not to take away the sorrows and pains of humanity in an instant; rather, He came to journey and walk with us through our hopes and fears, our joys and anxieties, so that we may come to share in His divine life. That is the reason why we celebrate Christmas: we thank the Father for the gift of His Son, who became man for us to be united with Him and to receive His divine life.
Christmas is the a time of the year when we reflect on this marvelous grace of God in the person of His Son, who by His coming as man, wills that we partake and share in His life as a son of God. Out of His fidelity and generosity, He chose to remain and dwell with us through His Son. By being one with us in all things but sin, He gave us so may gifts: light to cast away our blindness, cup of salvation to quench our thirst, the bread of life to fill our hunger, nourishment to cure our sickness, hope to awaken our despairing soul, forgiveness to heal the wounds of sin and division, and love to vanquish the pain and hatred in our midst.
Yet God did not only give us these gifts for our own benefit. Rather, He even gave us His only Son, the greatest gift we will receive this Christmas, so that these gifts may fully be with us and within us. Sharing in God’s divine life means being more Christ-like: we become more caring, more merciful, more compassionate, and more loving like Him. In effect, we are to share the gift of Christ with others, especially those who are considered “the least, the last, and the lost” in our community.
Come to think of it, who are we to deserve this wonderful gift of God? In our weakness and sinfulness, we are far from deserving this marvelous grace. But this is something freely given by God out of His steadfast love and overflowing generosity. God loves us not because we are lovable, but it is this love of God for us that makes Him love us all the more. Indeed, even if we our unfaithful, God remains faithful to us!
And so, our attitude to this wonderful gift of God is thanksgiving and generosity: we thank Him for making us share in His life through His Son, and in return, we express this gratitude by giving and sharing this gift to others and letting them experience God’s loving presence through us. Christmas is thus a grace-filled moment to be concrete signs and reminders of God’s presence and love especially to those who have yet to experience His love.
Emmanuel: God is with us! Our readings for this fifth day of our Misa de Gallo post a challenge to all of us to be signs and instruments of God’s presence and love in these times of calamities, suffering, and confusion. We, who have received tremendous blessings and graces this year, are called to count our blessings and be a blessing to others. We, who have been fortunate to be spared from all the hardships of natural and man-made calamities, are called to let the presence of God be felt by our brothers and sisters who have been gravely affected by them. Yes, there may be the signs of the times that we have to respond to, but there are more pressing signs where we can be also be instruments of change and love. Perhaps we need not to look too far in order to be “God-with-us” to others. We can be concrete signs of God’s love to our families, to our fellow workmates, to our neighborhood, and to our parish community through our life-giving presence and positive example to them. We can make God’s grace work in us by settling conflicts, fixing broken relationships, and bridging gaps that we may have caused or created in the past. By making God’s grace work within us, we become more Christ-like and in turn make lead others to share in His divine life as well.
As we continue with our celebration of the Holy Eucharist, let us beg for the grace of generosity and graciousness, that we may be generous and gracious just as the Father has been generous and gracious to us. We also thank the Lord for His loving mercy and kindness to us throughout the year, for remaining with us despite the times we choose to refuse to accept His love. We pray in a special way for those who need God’s grace the most: those rendered homeless by natural calamities, those suffering due to armed conflict and wars, those whose Christmas may not be as bright as ours. May our commemoration of His birth help us to similarly prepare our hearts to be God’s dwelling place so that peace and love may reign in this world of ours. May the spirit of Christmas, of God becoming one with us, make us grown in His grace and lead us to see Him more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly. Amen.

NBA Xmas Day Games: Top 10 Plays
since i don't have both basketball tv and nba tv premium at home, i was only able to watch two games today: lakers-bulls (i skipped 2nd quarter til mid 3rd quarter due to morning basketball, then the end of 4th quarter due to some home errands) and mavs-heat (which was aired on a delayed basis). nonetheless, watching our favorite nba stars at work brought good tidings to those who have been waiting for the nba after its infamous lockout.
regarding the lakers-bulls game, the end didn't come much of a surprise for me, knowing that kobe bryant will go on hero-mode only to be guarded by four red shirts and get blocked in the end. i am no kobe bryant fan and i will never be one, and this game just proves that when the game is on the line, he thinks of himself more than his teammates. it will still be worth watching if mike brown's system can fit into the lakers. remember that he only had one play in cleveland: pass the ball to lebron james and let him create by himself. though they have pau gasol in the lineup, if kobe will continue calling the plays like he did in several timeouts during the game, i don't see any difference with the cavs' fate during brown's tenureship.
regaring the bulls, when did derrick rose become a jumpshooter?! yes, he may have made that game winning teardrop, but he has to slash more and find open teammates for easy attempts. rip hamilton and carlos boozer were not very effective, but just like last season, the bulls' barometer is luol deng. if he plays solid down the stretch, expect the bulls to pick up the victory. but i like how the bulls defended well during the last three minutes or so of the game, as they forced turnovers and made baskets to cut down and eventually grab the lead. or maybe, they just got lucky that the lakers missed several free throws in the dying seconds and a bit of good luck on the part of the referee's whistle.
the miami heat foiled the dallas mavericks' opening day campaign, which started with a ring ceremony and the banner raising at the start of the game. of course, that sucks for the heat who have been erased last season from being favorites to win the title to choking in the fourth quarter. lebron james and dwayne wade continued to play good music together with their unselfish plays and alley-hoops. but like the bulls, the heat's success relies greatly on how chris bosh performs. he did not perform relatively well this game but lebron and wade have to get the third man of the big three to contribute to their cause. and like last year, miami is one big donut - with no real center effective enough to hold the fort against attackers. they might have lebron and wade swatting and bosh taking care of the boards, but a young talented big man might be their ticket to give miami its second nba title.
finally, the dallas mavericks looked downgraded in this game. they lost tyson chandler in the middle and deshawn stevenson as an alternate defender to lebron. they might have added vince carter and lamar odom to the mix, but a solid big man who will grab the boards and hustle to swat balls was that which made the difference in the finals last season. drik nowitzki was decent, jason kidd still has gas left in the tank, and jason terry was the reliable off the bench spark for the mavericks, but their heroics were not good enough to claim the victory after catching up a 35 point lead in the second half. but this was just the first game of the season: miami might have won it, but dallas won it when it mattered the most. but that was last season, and we'll have to wait on how the teams pen their own journeys and stories until the end of the season.

Merry Christmas!
God of Love, Father of all,
the darkness that covered the earth
has given way to the bright dawn of your Word made flesh.
Make us a people of this light.
Make us faithful to your Word
that we may bring your life to the waiting world.

Deification, Grace, and Christmas
"For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receive divine sonship, might become a son of God."

Merry Concords Christmas!
22 December 2011
All roads lead to Concords
the legendary shoe that michael jordan wore in the 1995-1996 season, air jordan xi concords, is perhaps on top of sneakerheads' and basketball fanatics' wishlist this xmas season. what could be the kicks that are easily identified with his airness, the 11s are for sure taking nike stores around the world by storm on its release date tomorrow. thanks to titan, i have my pair "secured" through the green chip and early email registration. but for those who have yet to fall in line and find their way to a pair, looks like it will be a long, narrow, bumpy, and winding road ahead for them.
today and tomorrow, all roads lead to the aj xi concords. here are some of the scenes of camp-outs for the concords around the world:

for those who are copping the concords on its release date, it's all about luck now. for those in line, it's hard to expect something tangible with heavy demand on limited supply. for those at the end of the line, it's not the end of the world. there might be a better release soon - maybe these or some other kicks. there are resellers around, but only diehards will submit to their "rape" prices. and for those who will cop, congratulations for getting the holy grail of your sneaker life. in the end, they're just shoes. they, like the rest of creation, shall pass.

Dear Santa Claus
dear santa claus,
i have been a good boy this year. well, i think so.
i have been a collector all my life. when i was in elementary, i collected nba cards and i still have my michael jordan and david robinson card collections intact. in high school, i collected magic the gathering cards and my red cheese deck is still with me. i also collected comics and i was able to keep those that are dear to me like the superman-doomsday series, which helped me write my college thesis. for the past several years, i have been collecting basketball jerseys of my favorite players. and this year, i have begun collecting basketball shoes.
i was fortunate to have owned two of the most memorable kicks during my high school years: nike air jordan 12 and nike air penny 3. i used these shoes mostly on cement courts, whether it was a daily pick-up game in the minor seminary or an official league game in our village tournament. unfortunately, the wear and tear it has undergone forced these kicks to retirement. in college, i had two memorable basketball shoes: and 1 mad game and nike hyperflight. i wore them for two basketball championship runs in the inter-seminary meet where our team won back-to-back titles. however, it also underwent tremendous wear and tear, and eventually threw the towel from competition.
since i graduated from college, i was the one who bought my own basketball shoes. growing up with a very supportive family who have provided my needs and wants throughout my life, i realized that i should start purchasing my own basketball shoes as i started earning on my own. my first purchase was nike air force operate, a shoe that i constantly visited when i was in the states in 2005 but never really had the chance to purchase it until it found its way to a nike outlet store in barangka. before embarking on the 30 day silent ignatian retreat, i bought a nike air force stat, which, like air force operate, were shoes worn by amare stoudamire - one of my favorite nba players at present. both shoes have played through countless games on both wooden and cement courts, for pick-up games and serious competition. both of them are with two of my closest friends at present.
two years ago, i saw one of my dream shoes - nike air max penny 2 - the last pair on store, with my exact shoe size, on sale with a hefty 40% discount. i immediately bought it, as it was one of the shoes that i never really got to have when i was in high school. it has served me well, giving me a championship in our high school alumni league and a playoff appearance in an inter-school faculty basketball league, until its retirement last semestral break.
the pursuit for my dream shoes did not stop there. last year, i copped nike air max penny 1 and nike air max 2 cb 94 - the shoes that i have wanted to have when i was in grade 6. since i had the financial capability to buy one, i got a them. i only use the barkleys when playing on wooden courts while i kept the pennys in deadstock. for cement courts, i bought an adidas ts commander as my pair of beaters. and just last month, i bought a nike zoom kd 3, which replaced air penny 2 for major basketball events. i still have a kd 4 blackout coming, and i hope to complete payment by monday. i learned to take better care of my shoes, and so established a humble collection of basketball shoes that i love.
however, there is this one shoe that i really consider as my holy grail - that pair of basketball shoes that i wanted to have yet have eluded me much - it has to be air jordan 11.
when i was in high school, i drew basketball shoes in my notebooks, particularly jordan 11s. since i only see them on tv or in the newspaper, all i had then was a doodle of jordan 11 concords on my notebook. i've seen and tried counterfeits, but i think there's no substitute for the real thing. and even when i was earning, i never really had the chance to buy the original. it was this longing for the original that made me look for it and hope for the day that it would find its way on my feet. until i learned that the concords will be released this year, i was given a new chance to get myself a pair.
however, this sneaker game has gone overboard, as seen in the black cements last month. resellers have stocked up prices, sizes are harder to find, and strategies for copping have been limited. until titan had this contest one has to write a 96 word essay why they deserve to have a pair of concords. unfortunately, i snoozed on that contest. i really thought i would not be able to get my pair of aj xi concords unless i subject myself to a wallet-slashing reseller.
until this afternoon, while researching some songs for our christmas program, i encountered a post of facebook that titan will be receiving poker chips that would assure a slot of buying the concords during its release on december 23. the release of the chips began at 2:23pm and there were only 22 chips up for grabs at titan katipunan. i gave it a try, i mean, if i'll get one, then thank god; if no, then it's really not meant to be.
and the try paid off.
and so, my dear santa claus, please make my christmas this year a truly memorable one. the chip was just one of three more steps to go. i still have to fall in line, get a wristband, and purchase. and the other is, i have to raise funds to cop my own holy grail.
santa, i have been a good boy this year. i've been through a lot and having the concords in my hands is a great xmas gift to me. the chip is just the start of the line. until then, i do hope that on the 23rd, the concords will finally be mine, and have a merry christmas.
love,
preacher in basketball shoes
p.s. now as to where to find the payment, i guess i might as well burn the bridge when i get there.

GOOD NEWS, GREAT JOY TO THE (BASKETBALL) WORLD!
with nba basketball returning on christmas day, nba fans are for sure contemplating on several things this "advent season" - perhaps change cable providers, subscribe to nba premium, join or activate fantasy leagues, practice draft skills in online mock drafts, get nba 2k11 (the only place where one can experience a full nba season), or even get a metta world peace jersey.
nonetheless, the xmas nba games have always been a spectacle for basketball fans. it's the time of the year when the league gets to schedule rivalries and interesting match-ups to treat the fans with the greatest brand of basketball on earth.
last season, what added spice to the games was the launch of signature shoes of players in interesting colorways: lebron 8v2 xmas day, kobe 6 grinches, kd3 in yellow, hyperdunks in green, red, and yellow, and all other sneakers in xmas colors. the game between the lakers and the heat last year featured some of these joints.
this year, we'll be treated to a triple header - celtics vs. knicks, heat vs. mavericks, and bulls vs. lakers - and who knows, even the launch of great kicks that sneakerheads would love to cop.
but for me, the most memorable nba xmas game was in 2008, when two of my favorite teams - san antonio spurs and phoenix suns - fought a game that was decided at the buzzer. the suns, bolstered by steve nash, amare stoudamire, and an aging shaquille o'neal, broke the deadlock through a grant hill basket with 4.3 seconds left in the game. that was until roger mason hit a corner three at the buzzer to silence the crowd at the us airways arena and give san antonio a very merry christmas with a 91-90 victory.
so what could be in store for us on christmas day? let's all stay tuned. have a merry nba christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!?
looks like we'll finally have our nba fix this christmas season. (click here for the article)
if things work out well between the nba players association and the league, we will be watching nba games starting december 25 (26 here in manila). scheduled games then will be boston celtics vs. new york knicks (one of those eastern conference rivalries since time immemorial), miami heat v. dallas mavericks (whoa! rematch of last season's championship!), and chicago bulls vs. los angeles lakers (1991, anyone?).
well, a full 82 game season is now water under the bridge. i'd rather watch a shorter season than nothing at all.
so please make this happen. and let everyone have a merry christmas.
